I’ve been fortunate enough to spend the last 6 months mostly at home with Lincoln. This has allowed me to breastfeed almost exclusively, which has been pretty easy for us. But now that the school year has started up and I’m more busy than ever in my senior year of college, we’ve had to change our game plan a little so I can be out of the house.
Anyone who’s had a baby knows how hard it can be for your little one to adjust when you’re shaking things up. That’s why now that I’m pumping more regularly and we’re bottle feeding Lincoln throughout the week it’s important for me to have all the things I need on hand at all times to make this transition smoother for the both of us.
This doesn’t mean I carry my pump with me; I prefer to pump at home. But it does mean that I need to be sure that I’ve got the right supplies to make our lives a little easier (in case I need to drop everything and send Lincoln with Jake so I can squeeze in a study session or make time for some observation hours at my elementary school).
Today I want to share with you all my diaper bag must-haves on any busy day as a pumping mama. These are the things that when we’ve got a lot going on, I can’t leave the house without! So if you’re just heading back to school/work, or you’ve chosen to pump exclusively, this post is for you!
First and foremost, I have to carry a diaper bag that can fit all of my needs. I personally prefer a bag that can be carried as both a backpack, and a regular bag. It also needs to be big enough to hold all the things we bring with us, have a ton of pockets, and of course, be super cute.
When it comes to feeding Lincoln, we’ve both been loving our NUK Simply Natural Bottles. These bottles are amazing and designed to be just like mom’s breast- meaning an easier transition from nursing to bottle feeding.
NUK Simply Natural Bottles have a few super cool features that make them the perfect choice for bottle feeding your bub. And it’s all in the nipple!
NUK Simply Natural Bottle nipples have multiple holes to provide a more natural feed- much like you’d find from mama. The 5 oz bottles include a nipple with a slow flow rate meaning they have 3 holes to allow for a slower flow of milk. We’re using the fast flow nipples at this point, which have 9 holes.
Another cool feature of the nipple on the NUK Simply Natural Bottle is that it’s shaped like a real nipple and it’s flexible, so your baby will stay latched on as they move around! Plus, NUK Simply Natural Bottle has an Advanced 1-Piece Anti-Colic Air system to help reduce colic, gas, and spit up.
You can pick up NUK Simply Natural Bottles at your local Walmart in the aisle where bottles are sold. They have 5 oz. bottles for when you’re starting out and 9 oz. bottles for later when your baby is bigger and needs more.
NUK makes a great line of breastfeeding items too! So if you’re like me and go back and forth between breastfeeding and bottle feeding I’d highly recommend checking them out.
Along with having bottles with me, I of course carry breast milk in storage bags. I’ll carry them in a little travel bag that’s lined to keep things cold. I also put a little ice pack in there to make sure that the milk doesn’t go bad!
I really like to have a nursing cover in there my diaper bag too. Not only for when if I decide to nurse, but because it can function as so many different things! If Lincoln is getting distracted and doesn’t want to focus on eating I can slip it over me while I feed him and he’ll focus on drinking from his bottle (which usually leads to a nap too). We use it as a high chair cover, a cart cover, and since we live in Vegas I don’t carry a blanket out with us during the summer (too hot), sometimes it’s a blanket (for snuggling OR setting on the floor) too.
It’s also important to me to carry a pouch with all of my diapering needs, including an outfit change and wet bag. You never know when you’ll need an outfit change! Babies are unpredictable like that.
Bringing things like toys in my bag helps Lincoln to stay occupied when we’re busy or if I need to drop him off at someone’s house. Most of the people who watch Lincoln don’t have baby toys (or babies) so I bring them in his bag just in case! I keep a couple pacifiers in my diaper bag as well because Lincoln seriously only wants them when he’s cranky and tired but won’t fall asleep.
Of course, I also carry my mom essentials which are some lipgloss, hair-ties, some nursing pads, and other little things I may need depending on the day and what we’re out doing!
Being a busy mom who’s always on the go means I need to have a bag that’s fully prepared for me to do all the things I have to get done throughout the day. Including switch Lincoln from breastfeeding to bottle feeding if need be- which is why I just love our NUK Simply Natural Bottles.
