Sometimes the mom life is just a little too overwhelming, I think anyone would agree. There are times when my kids have been going all day long and I still have to get things done after bedtime and I feel like I just can’t because I’m so exhausted- mentally, physically, and emotionally.
In our home, bedtime can be the worst time of day. Both of our guys are very clingy (towards me) and only let me put them to bed. It’s a little frustrating, and after a long day, it leaves me feeling touched out and tired. But if your home is anything like mine, after bedtime is when I get things done. Usually, I need that time to pick up the house again, get some laundry folded, doing dishes, etc. but sometimes I drop everything and take a break.
There’s nothing wrong with taking a break once in awhile. Mom’s need breaks more than anyone and sometimes have the hardest time taking them. There can be a lot of self-inflicted guilt that comes with it; especially if you’ve got things you still need to do.
But taking a break shouldn’t make you feel guilty. There are plenty of ways to take a break so you can recharge for a minute before getting things done. Here’s how I take a guilt-free break some nights after I get our kiddos to bed.
First, after getting the kids to bed, I like to take off my makeup and change into sweats. If I’m really feeling worn out, I might take a bath or shower but some nights I skip that. During the day I love looking nice and it definitely makes me feel good to dress up in the morning and put on makeup, but it’s such a great feeling to put your hair up, wipe off your makeup, and slide into something more comfortable.
The most important thing about taking a guilt-free break is having the right snacks. I love snacking on Simple Truth® beef jerky and drinking Honest Tea® when I have some alone time (so I don’t have to share my snacks of course).
These snacks are great to have on hand because they’re Organic and fair trade, which definitely makes me feel good about buying them (and since September is Organic Month I mean…). I also enjoy that Honest Tea is just a tad sweet- it’s simply delicious.
You can find Honest Tea and Simple Truth at your local Kroger, or Kroger banner store. We have a Smith’s right down the street which is where I buy my treats.
And of course, I love to catch up on TV or watch a movie while I take a break. Maybe that’s not your thing, but for me being able to watch something meant for grown-ups after being around kids all day is a nice break. I can relax and watch whatever I want without worrying about what little ears are hearing or little eyes are seeing- not that I watch anything particularly graphic, but still. It’s mom time.
I usually take a little half hour or hour long break. I’ll snack on my Simple Truth jerky and drink my delicious, unsweetened Honest Tea and chill out for an episode or two. After about an hour or so I normally have to jump back into mom life and finishing picking up, folding laundry, and taking care of other at-home responsibilities- but I always feel more relaxed and ready!
How do you take a break? Are you like me and enjoy taking a break at the end of the day after your kids are in bed? What helps you feel relaxed?
It’s kind of ironic, but I’m typing this away as I finish up *my* work for the day now that my littles are in bed. For those last night pushes delicious drinks and snacks are definitely a MUST! Looking forward to MY mom break in just a bit! They’re needed for sure!
